Ecosystem Unit
Know the meaning of all the vocabulary words: producer, consumer, decomposer, food chain, food
web, herbivore, carnivore, omnivore, scavenger, habitat, energy pyramid, energy, biotic factor, abiotic
factor, organism, population, community, ecosystem, environment, species, photosynthesis, ecology
* Be able to identify examples of different types of consumers. For example, a rabbit is an herbivore.
* Know the difference between a food chain and a food web.
* Know what an energy pyramid is and what each level in the pyramid represents. (Ex. Which level has
the most energy and which level has the least amount of energy represented on the energy pyramid.)
* Know the difference between an ecosystem and a biome.
* Know the difference between the biomes: tundra, taiga, temperate deciduous forests, temperate rain
forests, tropical rain forests, desert, and grasslands. Also, know some of the types of living species
found in each of the biomes.
* Know the difference between: marine ecosystems, freshwater ecosystems, estuary ecosystems.
* Know what a scavenger is and some examples.
* Know the parts that makes up a food chain.
* Know what an estuary is.
* Know why the tropical rainforest has a wide variety of plants.
* Know the difference between biotic factors and abiotic factors.
* Know the difference between an organism, population, community, and ecosystem. Also, be able to
match an example of each.
* Know the difference between carrying capacity and limiting factor.
* Know the meaning of a niche.
* Know the meaning of adaptation and camouflage.
* Know what an organism must have in order to survive.
* Know the difference between competition and predation.
* Know the meaning of mutualism, symbiosis, and commensalism.
* Know the difference between predator and prey.
* Know how energy flows through an ecosystem.
